Powieść Katarzyna jest ostatnią częścią cyklu podolskiego Włodzimierza Odojewskiego i obrosła literacką legendą, ukazała się ze wstępem i w pracowaniu Magdaleny Rabizo-Birek. Za życia autora, który zmarł w 2016 roku, zostały opublikowane cztery obszerne fragmenty tego dzieła (od Kultury z 1980 roku po Wyspę w 2007 roku, a inny fragment ukazał się w Wyspie w 2011 roku). Jak czytamy we wstępie zatytułowanym Sceny najważniejsze, najdramatyczniejsza, fragment ten był ostatnim ogłoszonym za życia w prasie tekście pisarza. W 2007 roku w Wyspie ukazała się też rozmowa z Włodzimierzem Odojewskim, jaką przeprowadził Krzysztof Masłoń. Obecna edycja jest pierwszą edycją zebranych fragmentów, publikowanych i niepublikowanych wcześniej.
