Generał Erich Ludendorff (1865-1937) był jednym z czołowych niemieckich dowódców w czasie pierwszej wojny światowej, m.in. współautorem zwycięstwa nad Rosjanami pod Tannenbergiem w 1914 roku. W latach 1916-1918 jako generalny kwatermistrz armii niemieckiej koordynował wysiłek wojenny Rzeszy. Po klęsce należał do krytyków Republiki Weimarskiej i upowszechniał legendę o zdradzieckim ciosie w plecy zadanym armii niemieckiej przez rewolucyjną lewicę. Wspierał ruch narodowosocjalistyczny Adolfa Hitlera, m.in. podczas nieudanego puczu w Monachium w 1923 roku. Jego książka Wojna totalna (Der Totale Krieg), wydana w 1935 roku, jest przede wszystkim dziełem politycznym, a nie podręcznikiem strategii wojskowej.
