W 1954 r. porzucił nauczanie w seminarium, by zająć się edukacją młodzieży licealnej. W latach 19641990 wykładał Wstęp do teologii na Uniwersytecie Katolickim w Mediolanie. W połowie lat pięćdziesiątych powołał do życia Ruch Comunione e Liberazione (Komunia i Wyzwolenie), obecny dzisiaj we Włoszech i w niemal dziewięćdziesięciu krajach świata.
