It shows how, with time, Jacob eats momma's milk less and less, until he stops completely. Owing to this, the child gets accustomed to the topic of ending breastfeeding, gets to know new ways to fall asleep and calm down, and, by identifying with the main character, he copes with the difficult emotions accompanying saying goodbye to mamma's milk easier.
