Polaków w Kazachstanie odkryła na nowo III RP w latach 90. XX wieku. Pierwsi repatrianci wracali do Polski na własną rękę, załatwiając sobie prywatne zaproszenia. Polski Sejm uchwalił ustawę repatriacyjną dopiero w 2000 roku. Na podstawie ustawy do Polski wróciło około 8000 osób, według różnych źródeł w kolejce czeka 15 20 tys. osób. 7 kwietnia 2017 roku Sejm przyjął nową ustawę o repatriacji, ułatwiającą powrót Polaków do kraju. W życie weszła od 1 maja 2017 roku. Według jej założeń do Polski będzie mogło wrócić ok. 10 tys. osób zamieszkujących azjatycką część dawnego ZSRR.
